India's left-arm spinner Varun Chakaravarthy will miss the remainder of the T20 international series against Afghanistan following a fresh side strain, the Board of Control for Cricket in India confirmed on Monday. An MRI scan revealed the injury, which has also jeopardized his availability for the Asian Games beginning September 19 in Japan.
The 27-year-old had returned to action for the series opener, where he took a wicket while conceding just 16 runs across four overs in India's comfortable victory. His comeback came after recovering from a hamstring injury sustained during India's tour of England in July.
The recurring injury concerns have reignited scrutiny over India's injury management protocols. The BCCI's Centre of Excellence has faced criticism in recent months amid a pattern of players sustaining injuries during the international schedule.
Chakaravarthy's potential absence would significantly impact India's spin-bowling options for the Asian Games. The tournament will see India play a historic T20 against Japan on September 22, before commencing their Asian Games campaign in Nisshin on September 28.
