Non-fossil energy sources now represent 54.18 per cent of India's total installed power capacity, Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav announced on Saturday, marking a significant milestone in the nation's transition toward cleaner energy. The figure surpasses India's stated target of achieving 50 per cent non-fossil capacity by 2030, demonstrating accelerated progress in renewable energy deployment.

Yadav made the remarks during the inauguration of a two-day international conference organised by the National Green Tribunal on environmental and climate dynamics. He underscored that India ranks among the world's top three nations in renewable energy installation while simultaneously holding the position of the second-largest solar power market globally.

The minister framed India's environmental commitments within the country's cultural and civilisational foundations, stating that the nation's approach to ecological responsibility derives from traditional values viewing the Earth as a shared inheritance requiring stewardship. He reaffirmed India's commitment to collective global action aimed at building a sustainable, resilient and equitable future.

Yadav's comments address a central debate in development policy, asserting that nations need not choose between economic growth and environmental protection. The expansion of India's clean energy capacity reflects investments in solar, wind and other renewable sources as part of broader efforts to meet climate commitments while supporting rising energy demands across the economy.
