India's coal ministries push for tripled stockpiles to prevent summer power cuts
India's coal, power and railways ministries have jointly launched a push to dramatically increase coal reserves at power plants ahead of the summer peak demand season. Officials aim to raise inventory levels to 55 million tonnes by March end, more than tripling current stockpiles.

In a coordinated effort to forestall potential electricity shortages during the intense summer months, three key government ministries have set an ambitious target to substantially boost coal inventories at thermal power generating stations across the country.
The coal, power and railways ministries have jointly committed to elevating coal stockpiles from present levels hovering around 18 million tonnes to a minimum of 55 million tonnes before the end of the current financial year in March. This three-fold increase in reserves is intended to provide adequate fuel supply buffers during peak electricity demand periods.
The move reflects growing concerns about maintaining reliable power supply as summer temperatures surge across India, traditionally creating elevated demand for electricity for cooling and air-conditioning. Thermal power stations, which depend heavily on coal supplies, play a critical role in meeting the nation's baseload electricity requirements.
The coordinated initiative signals recognition among government agencies that adequate coal inventory management is essential to preventing supply disruptions. By working in tandem, the three ministries aim to streamline coal procurement, transportation through the railways network, and distribution to power plants to meet the ambitious stockpiling goal.
