India's core infrastructure sector, a key barometer of economic health, posted a growth rate of 4.8 per cent in August, reflecting a slowdown from previous months. The core sector encompasses critical industries that serve as leading indicators for broader industrial performance and economic activity.
The measurement methodology underwent a significant revision in June, with the base year shifting to 2017-18 from the earlier 2011-12 baseline. This recalibration expanded the core sector basket to nine industries from the previous eight, bringing greater representativeness to the index.
Iron ore was added to the expanded basket, reflecting its importance to India's industrial economy and mining sector. The broader composition of the index now provides a more comprehensive picture of infrastructure-intensive activities driving the nation's industrial output.
The core sector includes major industries such as coal, crude oil, natural gas, refinery products, cement, steel, and electricity. Together, these sectors account for a substantial share of India's industrial production and serve as critical indicators for policymakers monitoring economic momentum and industrial health across the nation.
