India is ramping up efforts to position domestic defence innovation on the world stage through coordinated initiatives spanning coastal cargo promotion and cruise tourism development. The combined push is expected to create employment for over 560,000 workers while simultaneously cutting carbon emissions by 16 million tonnes, according to government projections.
The Coastal Cargo Promotion Scheme and Cruise Bharat Mission form the centrepiece of India's strategy to leverage its maritime advantages and boost the defence-industrial ecosystem. These initiatives underscore New Delhi's commitment to expanding the country's blue economy while strengthening domestic manufacturing capabilities in defence and related sectors.
Puri, a major pilgrimage destination in Odisha, is set to emerge as a cruise hub with a planned ₹1,500 crore terminal development. The investment signals India's intent to transform coastal cities into multi-purpose maritime centres that service both commercial and tourism-oriented operations, facilitating knowledge transfer and technological advancement across sectors.
The combined schemes reflect India's broader vision of integrating defence innovation with commercial maritime infrastructure, positioning the country as a regional hub for advanced naval technologies and services. Industry observers note that such integrated approaches could significantly enhance India's competitive advantage in emerging maritime security and commerce domains.
