India's defence production quadruples to Rs 1.80 lakh crore since 2014
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said India's domestic defence manufacturing has surged nearly four-fold over the past decade, with exports climbing to Rs 39,000 crore as the country accelerates its push towards self-sufficiency in the sector.

India's defence production has nearly quadrupled to approximately Rs 1.80 lakh crore over the last ten years, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said on Thursday, underscoring the country's growing self-reliance in military manufacturing. The minister made the statement after inaugurating a Rs 472-crore facility at the Vehicle Factory Jabalpur for the overhaul and maintenance of T-series battle tanks.
Domestic defence production, encompassing arms and ammunition, stood at just Rs 46,000 crore in 2014, the defence minister noted. The nearly four-fold increase reflects government initiatives to bolster India's defence industrial base and reduce dependence on imports. Defence exports have similarly accelerated, climbing from around Rs 1,000 crore in 2014 to nearly Rs 39,000 crore at present, Singh added.
The government has established an ambitious target of achieving defence exports worth Rs 50,000 crore by 2028-29, as part of its broader strategy to position India as a significant player in the global defence market. The expansion of manufacturing capabilities, coupled with rising exports, signals a marked shift in international perceptions of India's defence sector capabilities.
The Vehicle Factory Jabalpur, an ordnance manufacturing unit with over five decades of operational history, is expected to play a key role in the country's tank modernisation programme through the new overhaul facility.
