India's defence sector poised for growth, but execution challenges loom
Domestic defence manufacturers are positioned to benefit from rising order flows and supportive government policies, though supply-chain constraints and uneven spending patterns present significant implementation hurdles.

India's defence manufacturing sector is riding a wave of increased orders and policy tailwinds, with analysts pointing to a sustained expansion trajectory for domestic players in coming years. Government backing for indigenous defence production, coupled with growing order books, has created a favourable environment for manufacturers seeking to establish themselves in the sector.
However, industry experts caution that translating these opportunities into sustained growth will depend heavily on execution capabilities. Supply-chain fragmentation remains a persistent challenge, with manufacturers often struggling to secure critical inputs and components in a timely manner. The lumpy nature of defence spending—where large orders are interspersed with lean periods—also complicates long-term planning and resource allocation for private producers.
To realise the full potential of the sector's growth trajectory, manufacturers will need to strengthen their operational resilience and develop deeper supplier networks. Addressing logistics bottlenecks and improving coordination between government procurement agencies and private manufacturers will be equally critical. Without these improvements, the sector risks failing to capitalise on the current policy momentum and market demand.
