India's diesel demand surges 11.69% in October amid geopolitical tensions

India's petroleum product consumption patterns shifted notably in October, with diesel emerging as the standout performer. Diesel consumption expanded by 11.69 per cent during the month, reflecting robust demand across the transportation and industrial sectors. Petrol demand, by comparison, grew at a considerably slower pace of 3.11 per cent, suggesting a more measured uptick in private vehicle usage.

Liquefied petroleum gas consumption, however, declined sharply during the same period, dropping 12.11 per cent. Industry analysts attribute the contraction to supply-side disruptions cascading from geopolitical tensions in West Asia, which have created logistical challenges and price volatility in global energy markets.

The divergent movements across fuel categories underscore India's varied energy requirements and the differential impact of global supply chain disruptions on domestic demand. The robust diesel growth signals continued strength in freight and commercial transportation, vital indicators of economic activity. Meanwhile, the LPG contraction reflects supply constraints rather than reduced consumption needs, with households and commercial users potentially adjusting to availability and pricing pressures.

The October data comes amid sustained global uncertainty linked to developments in West Asia, which continues to influence energy flows and pricing across Asia's largest economy. Analysts are monitoring whether current consumption trends will persist in coming months as geopolitical factors evolve.
