India's drug regulator warns against reckless painkiller and antibiotic use

India's drug regulator has sounded an alert over the widespread misuse of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and antibiotics, warning that unchecked consumption poses a serious threat to kidney health. The Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) has directed healthcare professionals and pharmacists across the country to actively discourage patients from self-medicating with these commonly available drugs without medical supervision.

The advisory underscores the connection between indiscriminate use of painkillers and antibiotics and the development of chronic kidney disease (CKD), a condition that has emerged as a significant public health challenge in India. Kidney damage from prolonged NSAID use and antibiotic-related nephrotoxicity can lead to irreversible renal impairment if left unchecked.

Healthcare providers have been tasked with counselling patients on the risks associated with over-the-counter consumption of these medications and promoting rational drug use. The regulator's guidance emphasises that NSAIDs and antibiotics should be used only when medically necessary and in prescribed dosages, rather than for self-treatment of minor ailments.

The move reflects growing concern among medical authorities about the dual challenge of medication overuse and antimicrobial resistance in India. Pharmacists are expected to play a crucial role in this initiative by educating customers about safer alternatives and the importance of medical consultation before starting any medication regimen.
