India's Election Body Allocates Symbols to Rival TMC Factions

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has settled a significant factional dispute within the Trinamool Congress by allocating separate party identities and electoral symbols to rival groups led by Mamata Banerjee and dissidents aligned with Abhishek Banerjee.

The faction led by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will contest elections under the name "All India Mamata Trinamool Congress" with the football player symbol, the commission announced. The breakaway group, formally recognized as the "Democratic Trinamool Congress," has been assigned the envelope symbol for electoral purposes.

The dual recognition marks a formal acknowledgment of the organizational split that has gripped the regional party, one of India's significant regional political forces. The allocation of distinct symbols ensures both groups can contest elections independently while maintaining separate organizational structures.

The move follows mounting tensions within the Trinamool Congress between the Banerjee family leadership and party dissidents. By granting official recognition to both entities, the ECI has enabled a framework for democratic competition, allowing voters to distinguish between the competing political formations during elections.
