India's Electronics Sector Faces Heavy Reliance on Chinese Imports

India's electronics industry faces significant supply chain vulnerabilities, with Chinese suppliers dominating imports across at least 71 product categories during 2025-26. Data shows that China accounts for more than 80 per cent of India's import requirements in these product lines, indicating deep structural reliance on a single source for critical materials and components.

The concentration of dependency is particularly acute in upstream components—the foundational building blocks required for electronics manufacturing. These include semiconductors, circuit components, and other intermediate inputs essential for producing finished electronics products. The reliance on these core elements from a single country poses potential risks to India's electronics manufacturing ecosystem should supply chains face disruption.

This import pattern reflects India's ongoing struggle to develop indigenous capabilities in electronics component manufacturing despite years of policy initiatives. The government has promoted schemes such as Production Linked Incentive (PLI) programs to encourage domestic manufacturing, but progress in building competitive upstream component production remains limited. Developing local alternatives requires substantial capital investment, technical expertise, and time to establish competitive manufacturing bases.

The dependency carries implications for India's broader electronics and technology ambitions, particularly as global supply chains remain geopolitically sensitive. Building resilience in the sector will require sustained focus on developing domestic capabilities, exploring alternative sourcing options, and encouraging private sector investment in component manufacturing. Industry analysts suggest that reducing this reliance will be critical for India's goal of becoming a significant player in global electronics manufacturing.
