India's EV market posts strong annual growth despite seasonal August dip

India's electric vehicle market maintained momentum in August with electric passenger vehicles (PVs) registering a 52 percent year-on-year increase in retail sales, while electric two-wheelers (e-2Ws) surged 67 percent over the same period last year. However, month-on-month figures for both segments contracted, a pattern analysts attribute to consumer purchasing decisions being deferred ahead of the festive season when multiple vehicle launches and promotional offers are typically expected. The seasonal downturn is viewed as temporary, with industry participants anticipating renewed demand once festival campaigns commence. Vietnam-based EV manufacturer VinFast climbed to the fourth position in India's electric car market during the period, reflecting its expanding footprint in the segment. The two-wheeler segment witnessed competitive dynamics shift, with ride-hailing platform Ola's electric two-wheeler operations moving to the fifth position among manufacturers. The mixed August performance underscores the maturing nature of India's EV market, where seasonal patterns increasingly influence purchasing behavior despite underlying structural growth in the sector.
