India's EV market surges 45% but supply bottlenecks crimp October growth
Electric vehicle registrations in India climbed sharply in October despite persistent supply constraints limiting sales potential. Tata and TVS maintained their leadership positions across passenger and two-wheeler segments respectively.

India's electric vehicle market demonstrated robust momentum in October, with retail registrations climbing 44.88 percent year-on-year, though supply chain pressures prevented fuller capitalisation on strong underlying demand across vehicle categories.
Tata Motors consolidated its dominance in the electric passenger vehicle segment, while TVS held its ground as the leading manufacturer in the two-wheeler EV space. The gains reflected sustained consumer interest in electric mobility options as awareness and charging infrastructure continue expanding across the country.
However, component shortages and manufacturing constraints emerged as key headwinds, with industry participants reporting that available inventory fell short of potential customer orders. Dealers noted that demand remained robust across multiple EV categories, but logistics and production limitations prevented a sharper uptick in monthly registrations.
Analysts attribute the supply-side challenges to global semiconductor shortages and domestic battery component availability, issues that have repeatedly constrained India's EV sector expansion. Despite these bottlenecks, the 45-percent year-on-year growth underscores accelerating adoption momentum in a market increasingly shifting toward electrification.
The October performance suggests that once supply-chain headwinds ease, manufacturers could see substantially higher registration volumes as pent-up demand translates into actual sales across the Indian EV ecosystem.
