India's fertiliser stocks surge to two-year peak ahead of rabi season

Fertiliser inventories in India have climbed to 17.01 million tonnes at the beginning of the 2026-27 rabi season, marking a substantial 38 per cent increase from the previous year. The surge is driven by a sharp 54 per cent rise in urea stocks, signalling improved availability for winter crop cultivation.

India's fertiliser stocks surge to two-year peak ahead of rabi season

India's fertiliser stockpiles have reached their highest levels in two years as the country enters the 2026-27 rabi season, offering farmers improved access to essential agricultural inputs. Current inventories stand at 17.01 million tonnes, reflecting a significant 38 per cent year-on-year increase that underscores enhanced supply chain management and procurement planning.

Urea, the most widely used nitrogenous fertiliser among Indian farmers, has seen particularly robust inventory growth, with stocks rising 54.26 per cent compared to the corresponding period last year. This substantial accumulation comes as authorities seek to ensure consistent availability of crop nutrients throughout the winter cultivation season.

The elevated inventory levels are expected to provide greater flexibility in fertiliser distribution and pricing during the rabi season, when farmers plant crops such as wheat, pulses, and oilseeds across major agricultural regions. Improved stock positions typically help moderate supply constraints and price volatility that have periodically affected farmer profitability.

The buildup reflects efforts to strengthen India's agricultural input infrastructure ahead of peak planting demand. Adequate fertiliser availability is considered crucial for supporting agricultural productivity and ensuring stable domestic food grain production as the country navigates global supply chain complexities.
