The Financial Stability and Development Council (FSDC) has sounded a cautionary note on two major headwinds facing the financial system: the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence and elevated global bond yields. In a move to shore up defenses against potential shocks, the council has recommended implementing stronger financial safeguards across the system.
The FSDC, which serves as India's apex body for coordinating financial sector policies, warned that the AI boom, while offering opportunities for innovation and efficiency, presents regulatory and systemic risks that require careful monitoring. Simultaneously, rising bond yields in international markets pose challenges for capital flows and debt sustainability, particularly for emerging economies like India.
Chaired by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, the council emphasized the need for proactive measures to address these vulnerabilities. The recommendations come at a time of heightened geopolitical uncertainty globally, which the FSDC identified as a compounding risk factor to financial stability.
The council's focus reflects growing international concern over AI's rapid deployment in financial services and the ripple effects of tighter global monetary conditions. Indian financial regulators are expected to work in coordination to implement the suggested safeguards across banking, insurance, and securities sectors to mitigate potential systemic risks.
