India's fiscal deficit widens to ₹7.15 trillion in first half of FY27

India's fiscal deficit has widened substantially in the opening half of the current financial year, reaching ₹7.15 trillion by end-September 2026. The figure represents just over 42% of the budgeted deficit target for the full fiscal year 2026-27.

The deficit has expanded considerably compared to the same six-month period in the previous financial year, when it stood at ₹5.7 trillion. This year-on-year increase of approximately ₹1.45 trillion underscores mounting fiscal pressures on the Union government's finances.

The fiscal deficit—the gap between government expenditure and revenue—is a critical indicator of the Centre's financial health and budgetary management. A widening deficit in the first half of the fiscal year typically raises questions about whether expenditure levels can be controlled to meet annual targets.

Government finances are monitored closely by economists, rating agencies and markets as a barometer of macroeconomic stability. The pace at which deficits accumulate during the early months of the fiscal year often sets the trajectory for achieving full-year fiscal consolidation goals.
