India's food regulator seizes ₹81.8 crore in goods, suspends 1,100+ licences

India's food safety regulator has concluded an intensive enforcement drive that resulted in the seizure of food items valued at ₹81.8 crore and the suspension of over 1,100 operating licences. The two-month campaign, which ran from September 1 to November 5, represented one of the largest coordinated food safety operations undertaken by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).

During the enforcement period, FSSAI teams inspected 56,431 food establishments across the country, identifying widespread violations of safety protocols and regulatory standards. The regulator issued 10,047 improvement notices to operators found to be non-compliant with food safety requirements, offering them an opportunity to rectify deficiencies before facing further action.

The drive targeted multiple segments of the food supply chain, from manufacturing units and storage facilities to retail outlets and distribution centres. Officials prioritised establishments dealing in high-risk food items prone to contamination or adulteration. The suspension of licences affected businesses that demonstrated serious and repeated violations of safety norms.

The enforcement campaign underscores FSSAI's commitment to protecting consumer health and maintaining food supply integrity. Regulatory authorities have signalled that similar intensive operations will continue as part of routine oversight mechanisms across India's food sector.
