India's gem and jewellery exports surge 9.43% in September amid global headwinds

India's gem and jewellery exports reached USD 2.95 billion (Rs 28,157.55 crore) in September, marking a robust 9.43 per cent expansion compared to the same month last year, according to data released by the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC). The performance underscores the sector's ability to navigate a volatile international trading landscape and maintain growth momentum.

The momentum was particularly evident in studded gold jewellery, which posted a significant 50.23 per cent surge to USD 812.62 million (Rs 7,759.73 crore) in September from USD 540.89 million (Rs 4,778.36 crore) in the corresponding month of 2024. Plain gold jewellery exports also contributed positively, growing 8.76 per cent to USD 378.03 million (Rs 3,609.23 crore), as normalcy gradually returned to the Dubai market, a key trading hub for Indian jewellery.

For the first half of the financial year 2026-27 (April-September), gem and jewellery exports totalled USD 14.30 billion, reflecting a 3.07 per cent year-on-year increase from USD 13.87 billion in the same period last year. While this half-year performance grew at a more measured pace, the September data suggests strengthening demand and improving market conditions could support acceleration in the coming months as festive season purchasing gains traction.
