India's gold imports tumble amid demand questions and informal trade surge

India's gold imports have fallen significantly in recent months, creating uncertainty about the true state of demand in the world's second-largest gold consumer market. The decline in official import figures has prompted analysts to examine whether the drop reflects genuine weakness in consumer and investment demand, or whether substantial quantities are entering the country through unofficial routes to avoid duties and regulatory scrutiny.

Kotak Institutional Equities has outlined three possible scenarios to explain the import contraction. The 'good' outcome would see lower imports driven by adequate domestic gold stocks and weaker consumer demand tied to recent price rises. A 'bad' scenario would involve demand remaining robust while informal channels capture an increasing share of the import market, thereby reducing customs revenues. The 'ugly' possibility combines weakening legitimate demand with a shift toward unofficial imports, creating a dual challenge for policymakers and official trade participants.

Industry observers note that India's historically high import duties and taxes have long incentivized smuggling and informal trade routes. The recent decline in official figures may mask actual market activity occurring outside official channels, making it difficult for authorities and market participants to accurately assess consumer behaviour and plan accordingly. This distinction between recorded and actual import volumes carries implications for government revenue, organised sector jewellers, and macroeconomic data collection.
