India's government offices generate ₹5,100 crore through scrap disposal drive

The Indian government has generated more than ₹5,100 crore through scrap disposal as part of special cleanliness campaigns aimed at institutionalising administrative reforms across all central government offices, according to a statement from the Personnel Ministry issued on Tuesday.

Since 2021, five annual editions of the campaign, coupled with monthly secretariat reforms monitoring through July 2026, have covered over 24.20 lakh government sites. During this period, more than 180.48 lakh files have been weeded out or closed, the ministry said.

The most recent fifth edition of the campaign proved particularly productive, covering 11.6 lakh sites and resulting in the weeding of 29.52 lakh files. The initiative also freed up 233.75 lakh square feet of office space while generating approximately ₹833.92 crore from scrap sales alone.

To monitor progress on the sixth campaign edition, scheduled for October 2-31, Union Minister of State for Personnel Jitendra Singh will launch an online portal at cdpm.nic.in/SCDPM26. The portal will allow stakeholders to track implementation across government departments in real time.
