India's Government School Network Shrinks by 84,000 Institutions

India's government school system has contracted substantially, with over 84,000 institutions closing or ceasing operations between 2018-19 and 2025-26, according to education data tracking the country's school landscape.

Government schools' share of the total educational infrastructure has slipped from 69.8 per cent in 2018-19 to 68.54 per cent in 2025-26. The decline reflects a broader trend of private school expansion in India's education sector, even as enrollment pressures continue across both urban and rural regions.

Government-aided schools, which serve as a critical bridge between public and private education, have similarly seen their market share compress from 5.46 per cent to 5.4 per cent during the same period. This marginal decline, though smaller in percentage terms, represents a loss of institutional capacity in a traditionally vulnerable segment of India's educational infrastructure.

The contraction in government schools raises questions about resource allocation and investment in public education during a period of demographic growth. Experts attribute the shift partly to demographic transitions in certain regions, consolidation of unviable institutions, and the rising appeal of private schooling among middle-income households seeking alternatives to overburdened government facilities.
