India's GST collections surge 14.8% to near ₹2 trillion in August

India's gross GST collections accelerated to approximately ₹1.97 trillion in August, marking a robust 14.8 per cent year-on-year increase and signalling sustained economic activity despite global headwinds. The expansion reflects improved compliance and steady consumer demand across the country's tax base.

Import-linked GST revenue emerged as the primary growth driver, surging 29 per cent compared with the year-ago period. This outpaced the slower expansion in domestically-sourced tax collections, suggesting increased merchandise inflows and cross-border commercial transactions amid ongoing global trade dynamics.

Net GST revenue—the amount available to the Centre and states after accounting for refunds and input tax credits—rose at a more measured pace of 8.3 per cent to ₹1.68 trillion. This differential between gross and net collections underscores the volume of input tax credit claims being processed, a key mechanism designed to prevent cascading taxation across supply chains.

The monthly data provides a key indicator of India's economic health and the efficiency of its unified indirect taxation regime. Sustained GST growth has bolstered government revenues for both central and state authorities, supporting public spending and infrastructure development initiatives across the nation.
