India's GST Collections Surge Past ₹2 Lakh Crore in September

India's gross GST collections crossed the ₹2 lakh crore milestone in September 2026, climbing 14.7 per cent year-on-year to reach ₹2.04 lakh crore, according to official data released by the GST Council. The strong performance underscores sustained momentum in the indirect tax regime and reflects steady expansion in commercial activity across the country.

Net GST revenue—the amount available to the Centre and states after revenue transfers—surged 18.1 per cent to ₹1.77 lakh crore during the same period, outpacing the growth in gross collections. The differential growth rates reflect evolving compensation mechanisms and revenue-sharing arrangements under the GST framework.

The September figures extend a trend of robust tax collections witnessed over recent months, indicating improved compliance and wider tax base coverage. Economic activity across manufacturing, services, and retail sectors appears to be sustaining the upward trajectory in GST revenues, analysts noted.

The GST Council regularly monitors collection figures as a key indicator of economic health and fiscal performance. Sustained growth in collections supports government revenue projections and reduces reliance on other taxation measures to meet spending commitments.
