Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday endorsed the new GST reform package approved by the GST Council, emphasizing its three-pronged approach of faster decision-making, lower compliance costs and automated refunds. In a post on social media, Modi underlined the government's commitment to making the tax system more efficient, transparent and citizen-friendly.
The 57th GST Council meeting delivered several significant changes to the indirect tax framework. Most notably, tax officials will lose their arrest powers, while the prosecution threshold has been increased fivefold to Rs 5 crore. These measures represent a substantial move towards decriminalization of GST violations and align with the government's broader push to ease the regulatory burden on businesses.
The reforms also introduce a largely automated refund mechanism for taxpayers, addressing a long-standing concern about processing delays. Modi stated that the Council's recommendations on removing arrest provisions, greater decriminalization and simpler procedures would have a "very positive impact" on the business environment.
These changes reflect the government's sustained efforts to refine the GST regime since its introduction in 2017, balancing revenue collection with ease of compliance for businesses operating across India's interstate commerce.
