India's High Commissioner meets Bangladesh Finance Minister amid bilateral tensions
India's High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi held talks with Dhaka's Finance Minister on economic cooperation and development projects. The meeting occurs as uncertainty clouds Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's planned visit to India for next month's BRICS Summit, following renewed friction over Sheikh Hasina's extradition.

High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi met Bangladesh Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury on Thursday for discussions centred on economic cooperation and bilateral development initiatives between the two nations. The High Commission of India in Dhaka said the courtesy call focused on issues of mutual interest spanning trade and infrastructure projects.
Trivedi presented Chowdhury with a copy of the Arthashastra, the ancient Sanskrit treatise on statecraft and economics attributed to Kautilya. The Indian mission highlighted a passage from the text emphasising the value of education, stating: "Education is the best friend. An educated person is respected everywhere."
The diplomatic engagement comes amid strained relations between New Delhi and Dhaka over Bangladesh's demands for the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who has been residing in India since her departure from Bangladesh following political upheaval. These tensions have cast doubt on whether Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will proceed with his scheduled visit to India next month to attend the BRICS Summit.
The high-level meeting underscores efforts by both nations to maintain dialogue on economic matters despite the political complications affecting broader bilateral ties.
