India's industrial output growth slows to 6.7% in July amid sectoral weakness

India's industrial output growth decelerated to 6.7 per cent in July, reflecting a broad-based softening across multiple sectors of the economy. The Index of Industrial Production data signals a marked shift from the stronger performance recorded in June, raising questions about the sustainability of growth momentum heading into the monsoon season.

Manufacturing, which accounts for the largest share of industrial activity, saw its expansion rate fall to 7.3 per cent from 9.5 per cent in June. The sector's performance has become increasingly volatile in recent months, reflecting mixed demand signals and supply-side pressures affecting producers across the economy.

Mining and quarrying activity deteriorated further, slipping back into contraction during the month after showing signs of stabilisation in previous periods. The weakness in this sector underscores broader concerns about commodity demand and the health of upstream industries that feed into manufacturing and infrastructure development.

Analysts point to seasonal factors and the impact of monsoon disruptions as contributing to the softer growth trajectory. However, the synchronised slowdown across multiple sectors suggests underlying weaknesses in domestic demand and capacity utilisation that may require sustained monitoring in the coming months.
