India's infrastructure projects face ₹2.88 trillion cost overrun in August

Infrastructure projects under scrutiny by India's Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (Mospi) have encountered substantial cost escalations, reflecting broader challenges in project execution and budget planning across the central government.

The monitoring exercise, which covered initiatives spanning 17 central ministries and departments, identified a cumulative cost overrun of ₹2.88 trillion. The revised project costs have climbed to ₹33,60,069 crore against the original budgeted amount of ₹30,71,947 crore, according to the August assessment.

These cost increases underscore persistent implementation challenges that have plagued major infrastructure development in India. The discrepancies between planned and actual expenditures point to factors including supply chain disruptions, material price volatility, and project delays that have compounded financial pressures across multiple sectors.

The findings highlight the need for enhanced project management practices and more realistic cost estimation during the planning phase. As India continues to prioritize infrastructure development as a driver of economic growth, addressing these overrun issues remains critical for ensuring fiscal discipline and project viability across the government's development agenda.
