India's IT Ministry directs social media firms to curb protest-related unlawful content

India's Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) has advised large social media firms to take swift action against unlawful content circulating online in connection with ongoing protests, according to sources familiar with the matter. The advisory, issued on October 8, specifically addresses false, misleading, manipulated or out-of-context information being shared on digital platforms.

MeitY has flagged concerns that such content poses risks to public order and social stability while potentially triggering law and order issues. The ministry has expressed apprehension that the unchecked spread of unlawful material could incite violence and undermine communal harmony.

Under the advisory, social media platforms have been directed to identify and prioritise action against problematic content based on complaints lodged by authorised government bodies, including law enforcement agencies. The directive emphasises that platforms should respond swiftly to grievances filed through official channels by competent authorities.

The move reflects the government's broader push to regulate online content, particularly during periods of civil unrest. Officials have stressed the importance of collaboration between tech companies and state bodies to maintain digital ecosystem standards while balancing free expression concerns.
