India's employment landscape is undergoing a marked transformation, with hiring activity increasingly flowing beyond traditional metropolitan hubs to smaller cities and towns. According to a report by workforce solutions provider Genius HRTech Limited, 69 per cent of organisations have raised hiring from tier II and III cities by more than 30 per cent over the past two years, signalling a fundamental change in talent acquisition strategies.
The findings emerge from a survey of 1,729 employers conducted in August across diverse sectors including finance, BFSI, FMCG, engineering, information technology, manufacturing, telecom, and retail and e-commerce. The data reveals that organisations are deliberately moving away from concentrated metropolitan recruitment towards a more geographically distributed approach to talent sourcing.
Industry observers attribute the trend to multiple factors, including the rise of remote work arrangements, lower operational costs in smaller cities, and the growing availability of skilled workers outside traditional job markets. The shift also reflects efforts by organisations to tap into emerging talent pools and establish a more resilient, decentralised workforce structure.
The momentum is expected to continue building, with 55 per cent of surveyed organisations anticipating that tier II and III cities will account for the majority of their recruitment in coming years. The transition underscores a broader recalibration of India's employment distribution, potentially reshaping economic opportunities across the country's secondary and tertiary urban centres.
