India's jobless rate drops to five-month low in August

India's labour market showed signs of improvement in August, with the unemployment rate declining to 5 per cent, the most favourable reading since March. The decline signals a gradual recovery in job creation across the economy after months of elevated joblessness.

Rural areas demonstrated particularly strong momentum, with unemployment in agrarian regions dropping to 4.1 per cent—the lowest level in eight months. This improvement reflects seasonal factors related to agricultural activity as well as broader employment gains in rural economies.

Labour force participation also expanded during the month, reaching 55.6 per cent, a six-month high. The metric indicates a growing willingness among workers to seek employment or remain active in the job market, suggesting improved confidence in economic conditions.
