India's life insurance industry demonstrated resilience in September, with new business premiums reaching a 21 percent year-on-year increase, signalling sustained demand across the sector. Life Insurance Corporation of India and private sector insurers contributed equally to the expansion, reflecting a diversified customer base and competitive market dynamics.
The strong performance in life insurance contrasted with a more moderate expansion in the non-life segment, where premiums rose 6 percent during the month. General and health insurers powered the non-life growth, with motor, health and other segments showing steady traction among policyholders seeking coverage across multiple categories.
However, the overall non-life performance was constrained by a sharp decline in crop insurance collections, a segment that experienced notable contraction in September. Crop insurance, typically sensitive to seasonal patterns and agricultural cycles, saw declining new business registrations, offsetting gains recorded in urban-focused insurance categories.
The divergent performance between life and non-life segments, along with the crop insurance headwinds, underscores the varied growth trajectories across India's insurance landscape. Analysts attributed the life insurance surge to sustained interest in protection products and rising financial awareness among Indian consumers.
