India's manufacturing sector showed signs of significant strain in August, as the Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) fell to a five-year low, signalling a marked deceleration in economic activity across the industrial segment.
The contraction was broad-based, with new orders and output both expanding at their weakest pace in five years. The slowdown reflects a broader demand-side challenge, as businesses reported declining sales momentum and softer customer enquiries across key sectors.
Particularly concerning was a sharp pullback in manufacturing employment, which contracted for the first time in two-and-a-half years. The job shedding suggests manufacturers are responding to weakened demand by trimming their workforce, a concerning signal for labour markets heading into the final quarter of the fiscal year.
The manufacturing PMI reading underscores growing headwinds facing India's industrial economy, which has been grappling with elevated input costs, subdued consumer demand, and global trade uncertainties. Economists will be watching closely for September data to determine whether the August weakness represents a temporary dip or the beginning of a more sustained slowdown in manufacturing activity.
