India's MBA programmes triple in global rankings, but top IIMs slip

India's presence in global MBA rankings has expanded significantly, with the country now hosting 19 institutions among the QS Global MBA Rankings 2027, up from just six institutions in 2020. The surge reflects growing recognition of India's business education sector and expanding capacity in postgraduate management studies across the country.

Despite the overall growth, India's flagship business schools have faced headwinds in the latest rankings. IIM Bangalore, IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Calcutta—long considered the gold standard of Indian management education—have all experienced ranking declines. The retreats come as international MBA programmes have strengthened their competitive positions, particularly in metrics related to return on investment and alumni career outcomes.

The QS rankings assess business schools across multiple dimensions including academic reputation, employer feedback, international diversity, and graduate employment metrics. International institutions have been gaining ground in several of these areas, outpacing even India's premier management institutes in recent years.

Industry analysts suggest the decline of top IIMs in relative rankings may reflect the rising quality of global competitors rather than declining standards at India's institutions. Nevertheless, the trend underscores the increasing competitiveness of the international MBA market and raises questions about how India's business schools can reinforce their global standing through enhanced alumni networks and career placement outcomes.
