India's non-profits struggle with digital transformation, AI tools remain underutilized

India's non-profit sector faces a widening digital divide, according to findings from the Digital for Nonprofits (D4NP) report released in New Delhi. The assessment shows that the vast majority of organizations working across social causes remain poorly equipped to leverage technology for operational efficiency and outreach.

The report card is sobering: non-profits are scoring below the 50% threshold on measures of digital maturity, indicating significant gaps in their technological capabilities and infrastructure. This underperformance undercuts their ability to scale impact and reach beneficiaries more effectively in an increasingly digital landscape.

A particularly stark finding concerns unutilized resources. Many non-profits remain unaware of or unable to access free online advertising grants offered by major technology platforms—tools that could substantially amplify their campaigns at zero cost. The report suggests inadequate knowledge and capacity within organizations to navigate and implement these programs.

There are emerging bright spots, however. Interest in large language models and artificial intelligence applications is growing among non-profits, with organizations exploring AI's potential to streamline report writing and strengthen marketing efforts. However, this nascent enthusiasm has yet to translate into widespread adoption or tangible outcomes across the sector.

The findings underscore an urgent need for targeted digital capacity-building initiatives aimed at India's non-profit organizations, particularly around grant accessibility and emerging technologies.
