Public-sector oil marketing companies are intensifying cleanliness checks at fuel retail outlets, with senior executives personally inspecting facilities and introducing customer feedback mechanisms to transform washroom hygiene from a temporary campaign into a sustained service standard.

India's major oil companies are placing increased emphasis on toilet maintenance at petrol pumps as part of a broader customer service initiative. Under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas' Swachhata Abhiyan cleanliness programme, public-sector oil marketing firms are implementing regular inspections and upkeep schedules at retail fuel stations nationwide.
The drive has gained momentum from executive leadership, with senior management now directly involved in facility assessments. Directors of Marketing at Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IndianOil) and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) have begun conducting personal inspections of outlets, using these visits to underscore the importance of hygienic washroom facilities as a standard customer expectation.
Beyond oversight, the companies are deploying technology to gather traveller feedback. QR codes placed at petrol pump facilities enable customers to rate their restroom experience, providing real-time data on cleanliness standards and helping identify outlets requiring attention. This mechanism transforms the cleanliness initiative from a periodic campaign into an ongoing accountability system.
The strategic focus on washroom quality reflects a broader industry shift toward competitive differentiation through customer experience. By establishing clean, well-maintained toilet facilities as a reliable service benchmark, oil marketing companies aim to strengthen customer loyalty and distinguish their brand positioning in an increasingly competitive fuel retail landscape.
