India's Olympic reach narrow as participation gap widens with rivals

India's performance at the Paris 2024 Olympics was constrained by participation in only 21 per cent of available medal events, a disparity that highlights the country's struggle to compete across the full spectrum of Olympic disciplines. In contrast, the United States fielded competitors in 80 per cent of medal-earning events, demonstrating the breadth of athletic development and investment across multiple sports.

The participation gap reflects deeper systemic issues within India's Olympic ecosystem. Limited funding for sports development, inadequate training facilities, and the concentration of resources in a handful of traditional disciplines have restricted the country's ability to field competitive athletes across diverse sporting categories. Many events remain underdeveloped domestically, with insufficient talent identification and development programmes to nurture Olympic-calibre athletes.

India's historical strength in specific sports—notably badminton, shooting, wrestling, and athletics—has meant that investment and coaching infrastructure remain concentrated in these areas. Emerging Olympic sports and niche disciplines lack comparable support, leaving potential medal opportunities unexploited. This narrow focus, while sometimes yielding medals in chosen events, prevents India from maximising its total medal haul at the Games.

Experts suggest that broadening India's Olympic footprint would require sustained government investment in sports infrastructure, improved coaching standards across multiple disciplines, and enhanced talent identification programmes at the grassroots level. Until such structural changes take root, India's Olympic participation and medal success will likely remain constrained relative to comparable nations and global powers.
