India's passenger vehicle wholesales surge 21.4% in September

India's automotive industry witnessed substantial wholesale growth in September, with total passenger vehicle deliveries reaching 463,081 units, marking a 21.4 per cent increase compared to the year-ago period. The expansion reflects a combination of favourable demand conditions and a low base from the previous year.

Maruti Suzuki, the country's largest carmaker by volume, led the sector's performance with a 36.9 per cent growth in wholesales during the month. The company's strong showing was underpinned by resilient consumer interest in small cars and fuel-efficient CNG variants, which have gained significant traction among Indian buyers seeking economical transportation solutions.

The uptick in wholesale numbers underscores sustained demand across the passenger vehicle segment as the festive season approaches. Small cars and CNG-powered models have emerged as key growth drivers, reflecting shifting consumer preferences toward cost-effective and environment-friendly options in India's price-sensitive automotive market.

Industry analysts attribute the September performance to seasonal demand patterns and improving consumer sentiment, though the year-ago base effect contributed significantly to the reported growth rate. The sector's trajectory over coming months will depend on sustained consumer interest, supply chain stability, and economic conditions.
