India's power deficit surges fivefold to 544 million units in September

India's power supply crisis intensified in September, with the electricity shortage climbing to 544 million units from 98 million units in August, according to latest data. The sharp fivefold increase underscores mounting strain on the country's energy infrastructure as demand surged entering the autumn season.

The widening gap between supply and demand has been driven by multiple headwinds in the power generation sector. Coal stocks at thermal power plants—which remain the backbone of India's electricity generation—have declined significantly, constraining output from these facilities at a critical time when consumption is rising.

Thermal plants, which generate the majority of India's electricity, depend heavily on adequate coal reserves to maintain consistent power output. The depletion of stocks during September has squeezed generation capacity precisely when higher power demand during the transition from monsoon to winter months requires maximum supply.

The deficit, while still described as low in absolute volume terms relative to total national consumption, represents a notable deterioration in the power balance. Energy sector analysts have flagged coal inventory management as a persistent challenge requiring urgent attention to prevent further tightening of supply during the coming months when demand typically remains elevated.
