India's power sector coal imports surge to 15-month peak

India's power generation sector has significantly ramped up coal imports to meet surging energy requirements, with August shipments reaching their highest level in 15 months, new data shows.

Power producers brought in 5.52 million tonnes of coal during the month, a substantial jump from the previous year as utilities scrambled to secure fuel supplies to keep pace with unprecedented electricity consumption. The 85.6 per cent year-on-year surge reflects intensifying pressure on the nation's energy infrastructure as multiple factors converged to drive demand.

Extended heat-wave conditions across much of India forced consumers to increase air-conditioning usage, pushing peak electricity demand to record highs. Simultaneously, hydropower generation fell short of normal levels due to rainfall patterns, forcing thermal power plants to operate at elevated capacity to fill the gap.

The import spike underscores India's continued reliance on overseas coal supplies despite efforts to boost domestic production. Power companies have been actively sourcing international coal to secure adequate fuel inventories and maintain grid stability during periods of heightened consumption.

Industry observers note that the elevated import levels reflect the structural challenges facing India's power sector as it balances growing demand with domestic supply constraints and weather-related volatility in renewable energy generation.
