India's per capita protein consumption is projected to triple over the next five decades, according to a report by the Alliance of Religions and Conservation (ARE) and the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI). This substantial increase in protein intake reflects changing dietary patterns as the nation's economy grows and consumer preferences shift toward more protein-rich foods.
The expansion in protein consumption, however, carries significant environmental implications. The report estimates that protein-related emissions could surge to more than seven times the climate-safe threshold by 2070, positioning the protein sector as a critical challenge in India's efforts to meet its climate commitments. This trajectory suggests that current production and consumption patterns are fundamentally unsustainable from an environmental perspective.
