India's Rashtrapati Bhavan retracts statement on Bangladesh PM visit preparations

The Rashtrapati Bhavan on Friday retracted a statement issued earlier in the day regarding preparations for Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's visit to India, creating fresh confusion about the status of the diplomatic engagement.

The presidential residence had announced the cancellation of Saturday's Change of Guard Ceremony to permit a full dress rehearsal of the ceremonial welcome planned for the visiting Prime Minister. Within an hour, however, a fresh communique declared that the earlier press release "stands withdrawn," without providing clarification on the reason for the reversal.

The sequence of events underscores mounting tensions between New Delhi and Dhaka ahead of the BRICS summit scheduled for September 12-13. Relations between the two countries have deteriorated following Bangladesh's recent demand for the extradition of deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who fled to India in August 2024 following mass protests and political upheaval in Dhaka.

The withdrawal of the Rashtrapati Bhavan's communique leaves the status of Rahman's ceremonial reception unclear, with no official statement clarifying whether the Change of Guard Ceremony will proceed as scheduled or whether the rehearsal arrangements remain altered. The incident reflects the diplomatic friction presently characterising bilateral relations.
