India's retail inflation surges to 4.82% in August, exceeds RBI comfort zone

India's retail inflation accelerated to 4.82 percent in August, breaching the Reserve Bank of India's upper tolerance threshold and signalling persistent price pressures across the economy. The reading, the highest under the existing Consumer Price Index series, reflects broadening inflationary momentum beyond volatile food categories, with services inflation proving particularly sticky.

Food prices emerged as a primary driver of the uptick, with firming costs across vegetables, proteins and processed items offsetting earlier seasonal moderation. Concurrently, services inflation—spanning transportation, healthcare, education and other non-food categories—remained elevated, indicating that price growth has taken root beyond commodity-dependent sectors.

The August figures come as the RBI maintains its inflation target band of 2 to 6 percent, with a midpoint of 4 percent. The persistent deviation above the comfort zone underscores challenges facing monetary policymakers as they balance the need to control price growth against supporting economic expansion.

The inflation trajectory will likely influence the central bank's monetary stance in coming months, with policymakers monitoring whether price pressures prove transitory or entrench further in the economy. Economists remain focused on whether tightening food supply conditions and service sector pricing dynamics will moderate in subsequent months.
