India's retail inflation climbed to 5.54% in September, marking a notable uptick from the previous month's 4.83% reading, according to latest consumer price index data. The acceleration was predominantly driven by food items, which saw inflation spike to 7.74% during the same period.
Within the food basket, onion prices emerged as the primary contributor to inflation, surging 108.09% year-on-year. The sharp increase in onion prices—a staple ingredient in Indian households—has substantially pressured the overall inflation trajectory. Beyond onions, other essential food items experienced considerable price increases, with ginger, garlic, and lemon recording significant upticks.
The food-driven inflation reflects supply-side pressures that have persisted across agricultural commodities. Rising prices for kitchen staples and spices have cascading effects on household budgets across India, particularly impacting middle and lower-income consumer segments that spend a larger proportion of their income on food items.
The September inflation reading comes as policymakers continue monitoring price pressures in the economy. Food inflation remains a critical component of India's overall retail inflation picture, historically accounting for a substantial portion of the consumer price index basket.
