India's Roads Minister Proposes Multi-Level Infrastructure to Tackle Urban Congestion

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari arrived nearly an hour late to an official engagement in Mumbai on Monday after encountering severe traffic congestion, underscoring the persistent mobility challenges facing India's major cities.

Apologising for the delay, Gadkari used the experience to highlight the urgent need for modernised infrastructure solutions to manage rising urban traffic volumes. He emphasised that conventional flyover systems are no longer adequate to address the scale of congestion affecting metropolitan areas.

Gadkari proposed implementing integrated multi-level infrastructure systems that would optimise limited urban space. Under his suggested approach, multiple tiers of elevated roadways would be constructed on a single structural pillar, with metro rail transit operating at the uppermost levels. This stacked configuration would allow for enhanced traffic capacity while minimising the physical footprint required.

The proposal reflects efforts by India's transport ministry to introduce technology-driven solutions for urban mobility challenges. As cities continue to experience rapid population growth and increased vehicularisation, officials have acknowledged that traditional infrastructure approaches require reimagining to accommodate future demand.
