India's Rural Broadband Gap Presents ₹1 Trillion Satellite Opportunity

More than 50 crore people across rural and remote areas of India remain disconnected from broadband services, representing a substantial untapped market opportunity, according to senior officials of the Broadband India Forum.

TV Ramachandran, President of BIF, outlined the scale of the connectivity challenge while speaking at the 10th India Satcom 2026 conference on Tuesday. Analysis of data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) reveals the extent of the digital divide, with rural populations lacking access to terrestrial broadband infrastructure.

"Even accounting for lower average revenue per user in these regions, the present opportunity stands at approximately ₹1 lakh crore annually," Ramachandran said. "These unconnected populations cannot be reached through conventional terrestrial networks alone, making satellite communication services the most viable solution for bridging this gap."

Between 60 to 70 per cent of India's population currently depends on rural areas, underscoring the strategic importance of expanding digital connectivity to underserved communities. Satellite-based broadband services are increasingly viewed as a complementary technology to terrestrial networks in addressing the country's connectivity objectives, particularly in geographically challenging regions where traditional infrastructure deployment remains economically unfeasible.
