India's security chief heads to China for border talks before BRICS summit

India's National Security Advisor Ajit Doval is in China for talks focused on the contentious border dispute that has strained relations between New Delhi and Beijing in recent years. The visit underscores efforts by both Asian powers to stabilize ties ahead of the BRICS summit.

Doval is scheduled to meet Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on August 25, marking a significant diplomatic engagement between the two nations. The discussions are expected to centre on de-escalation measures along their shared frontier, where military buildups and periodic confrontations have been a source of friction.

The Indian official will also hold talks with Chinese Vice-President Han Zheng during his visit, indicating the high-level importance China is placing on the engagement. Such senior-level meetings typically signal willingness from both sides to work towards resolving bilateral issues.

The timing of Doval's visit reflects the importance both nations place on maintaining stability in the region ahead of the BRICS gathering.
