India's solar cell manufacturing lags module capacity by five-fold

India added 50.6 gigawatts of solar module capacity against just 9.7 gigawatts of cell manufacturing capacity during the January-June period, according to industry data, underscoring a persistent bottleneck in the country's solar supply chain. The five-fold disparity between module and cell production highlights India's continued dependence on imports to meet its rapidly expanding solar installation targets.

Solar imports surged 18 percent during the same period as domestic manufacturers struggled to keep pace with demand for photovoltaic cells, the core component that converts sunlight into electricity. The import surge reflects both the constraints on India's manufacturing base and the country's urgent need to augment renewable capacity to meet climate commitments and energy security goals.

Government initiatives to boost domestic solar cell manufacturing, including production-linked incentive schemes, have sought to narrow this gap. However, capacity expansion at Indian facilities has lagged behind the accelerating pace of solar module installations driven by falling global costs and supportive renewable energy policies.

Industry analysts point to capital-intensive manufacturing processes and competition from low-cost Asian producers as ongoing challenges for India's solar cell sector. The import dependency underscores the need for accelerated investment in domestic manufacturing infrastructure to achieve true energy sovereignty in the renewable transition.
