India's tech regulator directs Meta to diversify content recommendations

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has instructed Meta, parent company of Facebook and Instagram, to implement measures ensuring its recommendation algorithms do not create "disproportionate exposure of users to a single or limited set of narratives." The advisory, issued on October 10, represents a significant intervention by Indian authorities into Meta's content distribution practices.

The directive requires Meta to enhance its content moderation systems to identify and restrict material that could incite public disorder, violence, or other unlawful activities. The ministry has also asked the platform to provide adequate contextual information alongside visual content related to ongoing public events, particularly where details such as authenticity, date, location, or circumstances may be unclear to users.

While MeitY did not specify incidents that prompted the advisory, the timing coincides with recent political developments in Delhi involving opposition parties and civil society groups. The intervention reflects broader concerns about social media platforms' role in shaping public discourse and their responsibility to prevent algorithmic amplification of polarizing content.

The advisory underscores India's increasingly assertive regulatory stance toward major technology platforms operating within its borders. Meta faces mounting pressure from Indian regulators to demonstrate compliance with content policies while maintaining platform transparency and algorithmic accountability.
