India's telecom body and UK sign AI cooperation agreement

NEW DELHI — India's telecom industry body COAI and the British High Commission inked a memorandum of understanding on Monday to bolster joint efforts in artificial intelligence, digital infrastructure and responsible technology development.
The agreement was signed during the CO.AI 2026 conference, bringing together senior officials from government agencies, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, telecom operators, technology firms and other digital ecosystem participants. The event underscored the pivotal role artificial intelligence will play in building next-generation digital infrastructure across India.
The partnership will focus on three strategic pillars: deploying AI for intelligent and autonomous network systems, leveraging AI to enhance security and digital resilience, and harnessing AI to deliver improved public services and citizen benefits. Participants highlighted AI's growing significance in detecting digital fraud, strengthening consumer safeguards and optimizing network performance across telecom systems.
The collaboration reflects growing recognition among industry stakeholders of the need for coordinated approaches to AI governance and deployment. The initiative aims to foster innovation while ensuring digital infrastructure remains secure and trustworthy as emerging technologies reshape India's connectivity landscape.
