The Central Information Commission (CIC) has issued formal recommendations to the University Grants Commission (UGC) and Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), calling for enhanced compliance with disability access standards across educational institutions.
The recommendations focus on ensuring that universities, colleges, and schools provide fundamental accessibility infrastructure for students with disabilities, including ramps, wheelchair facilities, and accessible toilet facilities. The CIC has directed both regulatory bodies to establish stringent monitoring mechanisms to verify implementation and maintain accountability.
The move reflects ongoing concerns about the state of disability access in Indian educational institutions. Despite legal mandates requiring accessibility standards, many schools and universities continue to lack basic infrastructure needed by students with physical disabilities.
The CIC's intervention underscores the need for coordinated oversight between education authorities to translate accessibility requirements from policy into practice. Both UGC and CBSE are now expected to formulate and enforce guidelines that make accessibility audits and infrastructure improvements mandatory for all affiliated institutions.
The recommendations represent an effort to bridge the gap between statutory obligations and on-ground implementation, ensuring that students with disabilities can access educational facilities on an equal basis with their peers.
